Article by Eric J. Smith
Jasminum grandiflora is a beautiful plant of the Oleaceae family. It was previously known as Jasmine officinale and is commonly known as Royal Jasmine or Spanish Jasmine.
Jasmine is an evergreen shrub with a climbing habit. It has been known to grow up to 10 meters high. The Dark green leaves are barely recognisable when the white star-shaped flowers are in full bloom.
The aroma is most intense at night when the flowers are collected.
Jasmine and Lavender are my most favoured oils. Though very different, it is hard to distinguish between them for a favourite.
Oil Extraction process
The extraction of Jasmine Essential Oil is a slightly more complex task compared to most other oils. Firstly a ‘concrete’ by solvent extraction, and an absolute is obtained from the concrete by separation with an alcohol, an essential oil is produced off the absolute by steam distillation.
Uses as an Essential Oil
Jasmine Essential Oil is used largely in the manufacture of perfume but has many other beneficial uses.
Jasmine Oil has been used to for symptoms of severe depression. It can provide a feeling of confidence by soothing away nerves.
Jasmine can provide an increased sense of energy and euphoria.
Historically, Jasmine Essential Oil has been used in many areas of childbirth from increasing contractions to pain relief. After childbirth it may assist in maintaining the flow of breast milk.
The following is a brief summary of some of the benefits and possible uses for the use of Jasmine Essential Oil in a home setting.
- Jasmine oil may relieve tired aching joints, muscle spasms and sprains.
- Jasmine is soothing to the skin and may assist in repair of stretch marks wound and scar healing. It is suitable for both oily and dry skin.
- Jasmine Oil may assist Male Sexual performance.
- Jasmine may have benefits for the Upper respiratory system, it can relieve coughs and improve a croaky voice.
- Jasmine Oil can be used in Vaporisers and Burners, and as massage oil.
PrecautionsEssential oils have many benefits and can aid in the prevention or healing of many complaints. Every individual is different. Some essential oils can be toxic. Some oils must never be ingested while others require limited exposure to the sun due to phototoxicity. Read the label and ask your supplier if you are in doubt of the safest use for any particular oil. Not just the one in this article.
As an additional safety precaution be aware that this is a very relaxing oil and may cause reduced concentration levels.

The etymology of the word massage can be traced back to the Greek word “massein” which loosely translated means “to knead”. In our hectic, fast paced lifestyle, the massage has become a thing of luxury and indulgence. However, in as far back as the ancient times and ancient civilizations of the Greeks, Persians and Chinese, the massage has been used a medicinal treatment for common ailments. It was mostly used though as preventive medicine and was given a sublime or spiritual association.
The wisdom of these ancient people should be incorporated into modern day perspective. The massage can very well be used in this age as a sort of preventive therapy. If one takes the time to trace relations between illnesses and its causes, one will notice that a lot of the modern day ailments that befall the modern individual are mostly due to stress and a hyper active lifestyle.
Regular massage will help one maintain a balance between a hectic life and a relaxed, stress free life. This way, instead of creating a tension between these two worlds, you can create harmony and balance. To enhance the experience of a massage further, aromatherapy can be incorporated into the massage. This can be done by using an aromatherapy massage oil during the massage session. This way, you are able to harness the power of touch combined with the benefits of aromatherapy.
Whatever massage technique is employed, whether it is Shiatsu, Swedish or a combination, the benefit of using an aromatherapy massage oil will double the beneficial results of your massage session.
However you must remember to acquire the assistance of qualified massage therapists because untrained individuals may cause more harm than good when it comes to practicing massage techniques. Once you have found a qualified professional, before starting the massage session, you must tell your therapist about what you want to achieve and give a personal history so that both of you can decide what best type of massage therapy will be best given your special personal situation.
Decide on which aromatherapy massage oil to use for your situation. For instance if you need an invigorating and relaxing massage, you might decide to use a rose blend for your aromatherapy massage oil. This blend consists of some sandalwood, rose and jasmine. Done properly, the use of this aromatherapy massage oil in your massage will do wonders for your mood and physical being.
You must remember though to plan the schedule of your massage appropriately, Although you can start your day with a massage using an aromatherapy massage oil, remember that you should not bathe at least 8 hours after your session to allow the aromatherapy massage oil to be fully absorbed by the body.
Going back to the use of aromatherapy massage oils, you should not be afraid to try and make your own blends. You will find recipes in books and online for aromatherapy massage oils, however, this should not limit you into using just these recipes. After you have gained a certain proficiency and knowledge about essential oils and their benefits, you can try experimenting to make your own perfect blend for an aromatherapy massage oil. This way, each experience can be unique and wonderful at the same time and personally suited to your needs.

But before you plunge in on the aromatherapy fad, make sure that you know some important points about it. Below are just some of the things that you should take into heart. Read on and you might learn something that might help you.
Perfume oils are not the same as essential oils.
For those who are just buying these oils for the first time, make sure that what you are buying is the only you truly need. What makes an essential oil different from a perfume oil is the fact that it has therapeutic benefits and not just aromatic ones. This means that an essential oil will not only serve as fragrance in your home, it can also relax you and release unwanted energies.
Never ever buy essential oils that are being used with rubber dropper tops or buy oils with rubber dropper tops. This is because the rubber has some properties that can ruin the oil. The extreme concentration of the oils can turn the rubber into a gum.
Read about it.
It is not enough that you ask for people that are selling the oils. You’ll never really know if what they are telling you are truths that can help you with your self-therapy. The best way to learn about aromatherapy is to read books and articles about the topic. This way, you are being given an objective view about it and some of the products that you’ll be buying. In choosing a service or a product it is also a good idea to look for those with good reviews from newspapers and magazines.
Another topic that you should read on about is the safety of therapy. Actually, it is a required reading before you start on the therapy. There are also websites that are devoted solely to the process of aromatherapy. Search on these sites as they contain hundreds of articles that can help you get started.
Choose your store.
Although new stores may also offer quality products, if you are not familiar with aromatherapy yet, it is good to stick with the brands that are already established. Remember that aromatherapy has safety issues that you should also take heed. After which, when you know enough about the business and the products, you can switch to less established ones but with good reviews.
Also, {prevent|avoid|steer clear of} {purchasing|buying|getting} {important|essential|crucial} {natural oils|oils|skin oils} in {road|street|avenue} {festivals|fairs|gatherings} and bazaars or from {any organization|any company|any business} that {have no|do not have any} {long term|permanent|long lasting} {operating|working|functioning} {tackle|address|deal with}. {This isn’t|This is not|This is simply not} {to express|to say|to state} that {items|products|goods} in {occasions|events|activities} {such as this|like this|similar to this} {don’t have|do not have|would not have} {high quality|quality|top quality} {this is a|it is just a|it’s really a} {caution|warning|forewarning} {in the event you|just in case you|for those who} {buy|buy something|spend money} {you need to|that you have to|that you must} {come back|return|go back}.
{Discover|Learn|Understand} {assessment|comparison|evaluation}.
Teach yourself the art of shopping for oils and scents. It is good to know what scent goes to what essential oils. You should also learn to compare scents. It also helps if you are familiar with some of the most common essential oils in the market. That way, it will be easier for you to buy what you want.

Question by Whitters: How do you extract essential oils?
I am wanting to extract essential plant oils. I have been researching it online and several sites mention homemade distillers, but I can’t seem to find any plans for it. Does anyone know where I can find plans for this, preferably with pictures? Also any tips or advice related to this process would be appreciated.Best answer:

Building an Essential Oil Still
Step 1Drill a hole in the lid of an empty milk jug using a 3/4-inch drill bit, taking care to wash and clean the jug before you do so. Drill a second hole of the same size somewhere on the lower walls of the jug.Step 2Saw off the top portion of the second milk jug and drill a 3/4-inch hole in the bottom.
Step 3Wrap a piece of 3/4-inch copper tubing around an empty tennis ball can. You will want at least 7 or 8 coils’ worth, and there should be a certain amount of free tubing left on either end. You’ll need enough free tubing on one end to reach between the two milk jugs, and enough on the other end to poke through the hole in the second milk jug.
Step 4Seal a metal teakettle, using glue to seal the cap and a rubber stopper in the spout. Drill a 3/4-inch hole in the stopper for your copper tubing.
Step 5Place a meat thermometer through the stopper–somewhere between the 3/4-inch hole and the edge–to allow you to monitor the temperature inside.
Step 6Attach a second piece of copper piping to the hole in the teakettle stopper and the other end through the hole in the lid of the first milk jug.
Step 7Connect one end of the coiled piece of copper to the bottom section of the jug, and lay the coils themselves in the second jug. Run the other end of the copper tubing through the hole in the bottom of the jug.
Step 8Place a glass jar under the end of the tubing, to collect your essential oil extract.
Step 9Seal all free openings to your still with sealant just before you begin the distillation process.
Distilling the Oil
Step 1Find plant material containing the essential oils you wish to distill. You want plants with a healthy sheen to them and which have not been unduly damaged. Whole dry plant material works well because it allows you to fit more into the still and increase your yield.Step 2Fill the first milk jug full of the plant material, packing it in as tightly as possible. (Store-bought stills will have their own containers for the plants.)
Step 3Fill the second milk jug (or the condenser on a store-bought still) with ice or extremely cold water.
Step 4Add water to the tank of your still by removing the rubber cap on your teakettle.
Step 5Set the teakettle or still tank over a stove and heat the water to a boil. Make sure all of your openings are sealed before beginning.
Step 6Check the still regularly for signs of progress. The steam from the boiling water should distill the oils from the plants without any further effort on your part, but you’ll want to watch out for any accidents.
Step 7Filter the extracted oil through a clean piece of cheesecloth and then funnel it into an appropriate container made of steel or dark glass. Seal the container and store it in a cool, dry place. Most essential oils will last for up to 2 years if properly preserved.

In its {precise|exact} definition, aromatherapy is the {procedure|process|method|approach} of {utilizing|using|making use of|employing} volatile plant oils in order to treat not only the physical {nicely|well|properly|effectively} {becoming|being|getting} of a {individual|person|particular person} but also his or her psychological and {psychological|mental} {well being|health|wellness}.
From decades past, apothecary drawers have been filled with {important|essential|crucial|vital} oils that have been {utilized|used|employed|utilised} in the {therapy|treatment|remedy} of {illnesses|diseases|ailments} and other {well being|health|wellness} {issues|problems|difficulties|troubles}. In {reality|fact|truth}, the practice of {utilizing|using|making use of|employing} oils has been in {location|place|spot} for {almost|nearly|practically|virtually} a thousand years. It was {nevertheless|however|nonetheless|even so} only in the 20th century when the term aromatherapy was {utilized|used|employed|utilised}.
It {began|started|started out} with the Chinese, who are {amongst|among} the {initial|first|1st|very first} cultures to incorporate the practice into their traditions. They use plant oils and burns incense to {assist|help|aid|support} {produce|create|develop|generate} balance {inside|within|inside of} the {physique|body} and harmony with nature.
Later on, the Egyptians adopted the practice and {produced|created|developed|designed} an old distiller prototype which extracts cedarwood oil crudely. The oils that they extract from the plant are then sold in markets in their {nation|country}. There are some that claim that Persia and India {had been|were} the ones that invented the distillation {procedure|process|method|approach} but of course {absolutely nothing|nothing|nothing at all|practically nothing} has been {confirmed|proven|verified} {but|yet|however|nevertheless}.
As time passed, the Egyptians {began|started|started out} to extract oils from {various|different|distinct|diverse} plants. In addition to cedarwood, they use clove, nutmeg, cinnamon and myrrh. These oils {had been|were} also {utilized|used|employed|utilised} in the embalming of their dead. In {reality|fact|truth}, when an Egyptian tomb was opened back in the early 20th century, remains and traces of these plants {had been|were} {observed|seen|noticed|witnessed} in some {components|parts|elements} of the {physique|body}. Archaeologists {had been|were} even {in a position|able|ready|capable} to smell the scent.
The Egyptians also {utilized|used|employed|utilised} the scents and the oils in some of their rituals, {particularly|especially|specifically|specially} {these|those} that are spiritual in nature. Some also {utilized|used|employed|utilised} the oils as medicines {whilst|while|although|even though} the {ladies|women|females|girls} {utilized|used|employed|utilised} them as perfumes and cosmetic. In {reality|fact|truth}, the word perfume is {believed|thought} to have come from the latin word fumum, which {indicates|means|signifies|implies} smoke. There are claims that {males|men|guys} also use fragrance like {ladies|women|females|girls} but they have an {fascinating|interesting|intriguing|exciting} {technique|method|approach|strategy} of {performing|doing|carrying out|undertaking} it. They will {location|place|spot} a solid cone of perfume on their heads, which they will gradually melt {till|until} the perfume and scent cover their {entire|whole|complete} bodies.
The Greeks also {utilized|used|employed|utilised} perfumes but of course {every thing|everything|every little thing|anything} was credited to the Gods of their mythology. {Nonetheless|Still|Nevertheless} the use of plant oils as perfume took a life of its {personal|own|very own} and soon Megallus {created|made|produced} a perfume from myrrh, which is a fatty-oil. His perfume {known as|called|referred to as|named} the Megaleion not only had aromatic {advantages|benefits|rewards|positive aspects}, it can also heal wounds and has an anti-inflammatory property towards the skin. It was also the Greeks that established the medicinal purposes of plants. In {reality|fact|truth}, the father of medicine, Hippocrates, practiced the use of plants for its aromatic and medicinal {advantages|benefits|rewards|positive aspects}.
Armed with the {understanding|knowledge|information|expertise} that they have gotten from the civilizations of the Egyptians and the Greeks, Roman Discorides wrote a book {known as|called|referred to as|named} De Materia Medica, which essays the {various|different|distinct|diverse} properties of as {a lot|much|significantly|considerably} as 500 plants.
In the 11th century, a {procedure|process|method|approach} {known as|called|referred to as|named} coiled cooling pipe was invented. This had a {big|large|huge|significant} {influence|impact|effect} on the distillation of {important|essential|crucial|vital} oils. Avicenna, a Persian, was the {1|one|one particular|a single} who {produced|created|developed|designed} the prototype, which allowed steam and vapor from the plant to cool down so that it can be extracted {much better|better|far better|greater} and {quicker|faster|more quickly|more rapidly} than other distilling machines. {Simply because|Because|Since|Due to the fact} of this invention, the {concentrate|focus} {as soon as|once|when|the moment} {once more|again|once again} went to the {advantages|benefits|rewards|positive aspects} of {important|essential|crucial|vital} plant oils.

August 24, 2010 Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)This review is from: Aromatherapy Complete Herbal Pack Set- Celestial Pattern (Health and Beauty)I purchased this heating pad set based on the rerview, and because I had a similar product(that was great, but getting worn from daily use over years), which I wanted to replace. When the set came I was very disappointed! The fabric is extremley hard and uncomfotable! which defeats the whole purpose of a heating pad. The only reason I gave the product one star is because it does get hot.
When I called and informed the seller that I was not satisfied with the product I was told that a repackaging fee would be deducted from my return. The product came in plastic bags with tape, which I resealed in the same condition I received them in! Total rip off! BUYER BEWARE!

The items I used most were the shoulder pack and the back belt. They get hot and they stay hot for a decent amount of time. When I decided I wanted these herbal packs it was because I used an herbal pack that a friend had. These packs did not smell as nice when heated and I don't think they use a high quality fill compared to some other packs out there. Also, my shoulder pack broke and obviously the stuff came out. It looked like these things are filled mostly with rice or something. I'll try to post a pic of the filling one of these days.
Also, the picture shows the items in purple. Mine came in black and I would have preferred the purple.
In general I like the kit and I'm glad I got it but it somewhat missed the mark in quality for me. I'll be looking to replace some of the components with some of the made in the USA brands which will hopefully be similar in quality as to what I tried in the past.

December 11, 2009 ByJennafien "Jenn" (United States) - See all my reviewsAmazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)This review is from: Eucalyptus 100% Pure Therapeutic Grade Essential Oil, 30 ml (Misc.)I add a few drops of this to my humidifier when I have a cold and I breathe better all night. I can really tell a difference when I don't use it, waking up stuffy and with a headache. A little bit goes a long way! If you wake up "mouth-breathing" because of a stuffy nose, give this a try with a humidifier.

I had written a review giving only one star, and without sending my broken item back(it had been crushed in the mail in the envelope they sent it to me). October 15, 2010 This review is from: Supreme Aromatherapy 100% Pure Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils Set (Essential Oil Gift Pack)- 64/ 10 ml (Health and Beauty)What a treat to get this set in the mail. Not only did it come pretty much overnight, it was so nicely packaged and wrapped. But the biggest surprise came when I opened the boxes. I have been in the aromatherapy world for a lot of years and have seen my share of bad oils. This company is top notch in everything they do. The oils are very high quality, the labeling is classy. This set had just about everything someone could ask for. Great mixture of all the top 64 oils. Would highly recommend. Also, purchased a 64 oil holder with it, that works great. Thanks! I will be returning.

March 2, 2011 This review is from: Supreme Aromatherapy 100% Pure Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils Set (Essential Oil Gift Pack)- 64/ 10 ml (Health and Beauty)I love, love, love this set. I have fallen in love with these oils. It is not an understatement when I say I am very impressed. I received this set form my husband for Christmas. I was sad to see one small gift under the tree from him. When I opened it, I understood why. It was full of many wonderful aromas- from fruity to earthy and everywhere in between. Each oil is beautifully packaged in colorful colors, pretty enough where I want to set them all out. It makes me smile to see and smell them all. The oils themselves are very high quality and I have been known to be picky. I would highly recommend to anyone- from the first timer to the advanced. Thank you!!!

April 21, 2011 ByAmazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)This review is from: Supreme Aromatherapy 100% Pure Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils Set (Essential Oil Gift Pack)- 64/ 10 ml (Health and Beauty)I purchased the beginner Essential Oil set offered by Eden's Garden during Christmas 2010 for my wife who is a physical therapist and wanted to incorporate aromatherapy with her patients. She tested those out for a while and has diffused the oils and used them with carrier oils for massage, as well. The aromas were great and did not cause any skin irritations when used with carrier oils. So, when her birthday came around she specifically asked for the Supreme Aromatherapy set to expand her new collection (and obsession). I ordered it in March and everything arrived in perfect condition and was packaged nicely. She really loved the set. All bottles were sealed and came exactly as pictured in the product description. You definitely get your money's worth considering the cost of the oils if you added them up separately. Overall, the Essential Oils are of very good quality, smell fantastic, and have proven to be very useful. The only thing that would help is a recipe guide or list or oils that go well together.

May 19, 2011 ByAmazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)This review is from: FRUIT 100% Pure Essential Oil 6 Set- (Grapefruit, Lemon, Lime, Lemongrass, Sweet Orange & Tangerine)- 6/ 10 ml (Health and Beauty)I purchased these oils because I heard great things about the brand and I was getting tired of the Wal-mart selection not being exactly what I was looking for not to mention the fragrances smelled a little too fake. So I decided to start small and get the fruit blend.
Grapefruit- 5/5
Lemongrass (potent, almost candied version of lemon)- 5/5
Lemon (milder than the lemongrass)- 5/5
Tangerine- (milder than the sweet orange)- 4/5
Sweet Orange- 5/5
Lime- 4/5
All in all I am loving this kit and I am looking forward to getting another set of this particular product and maybe a six set of something else. The fragrances are very strong so therefore you need not use more than a few drops. The built in dropper is really a nice feature. I diluted the fragrance with a cheap version of lavender fragrance that I got from the Dollar Tree. It has a light, very subtle fragrance but nonetheless you really cannot smell much and it enhances the essential oil fragrance nicely. I used five drops of Lemongrass and two drops of Lemon and the fragrance is too strong so I would definitely watch the amount. Right now I am using an electric ceramic fragrance diffuser that I purchased from Wal-mart but I am looking for another one that allows me to control the heat and intensity of the fragrance. I am not disappointed at all and if this is your first time purchasing fragrance oil then this is the one to start with!

March 20, 2011 ByMysterious Microburst "Apocryphal Raven" (Mohave County, AZ) - See all my reviewsThis review is from: Relaxation Synergy Blend Essential Oil- 10 ml (Lavender, Marjoram, Patchouli, Mandarin, Geranium & Chamomile) (Misc.)Undiluted oil comes on strong, with first impression of strong citrus/earth with a breakdown of "notes" which is fascinating. I was sniffing my wrists every hour or so and each time came back with another part of the blend dominating. This complexity is olfactory fun, like a story unfolding in scent.
Thus, it is recommended for those who are put off by an initially potent scent do as Edens Gardens suggests: dilute. Use jojoba or grapeseed oil. I'm tempted to add it to shea butter and wax some unfinished wood, just to keep the scent around me. The blend creates emotions of cleanness and clarity in my sensory realm.
To the person who wrote the one-star review: I suspect you did not dilute the oil. Then there are people who cannot handle strong scents and those whose body chemistry will not meld well with some oils, even when diluted properly. For example, oak moss smells delicious on me but sandalwood (and I've tried many) tends to develop an unpleasant "fishy" note. When I blend sandalwood with a bit of amber resin, this eliminates the fish problem.
How an oil smells on your skin can be modified according to medications you take, whether you smoke cigarettes and whether you are a carnivore, vegetarian or vegan. There are many variables in the chemistry of scent, which is why there is no "one size fits all" oil, blend or perfume.
I'm having fun with this oil and am impressed with the quality for such a low price.

March 8, 2011 ByThis review is from: 100% Pure Essential Oil Basic Sampler Set 6/10 ml (Lavender, Tea Tree, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Rosemary and Sweet Orange) (Health and Beauty)I was not happy with the quality of these oils. After losing all of my oils and wanting to replace them without bankrupting myself, I thought that this sampler would be a good idea: because these six oils truly are the most common basics, I figured that the quality wouldn't be too much of an issue and it would be safe to go with a less expensive company's products. I was wrong.
Of the six oils included in this set, the sweet orange and tea tree oils were the only ones that really seemed up to snuff to me. The rosemary and eucalyptus globulus were simply *rank.* Truly awful. I've never smelled anything quite like them before, and sincerely hope never to again. The peppermint faded so quickly that I suspect that it was already quite old when it was bottled, and the lavender was...well, I guess fine for medicinal purposes, like burns and scrapes and athlete's foot and suchnot. I wouldn't use it for any aromatherapy purposes that depend on scent, though: it is supposedly from Bulgaria, but it is harsher and less floral than any other Bulgarian lavender I've ever experienced. It smells much more like a lavandin than like the augustifolia it claims to be.
I'm not new to this, and I know what these oils are supposed to smell like. These just aren't good examples. I don't doubt that they really are "therapeutic quality," but that term can encompass a huge range of quality, and these oils are scraping the bottom. You can't beat the price, to be sure, but if I had it to do again, I'd have saved up my pennies and gone with a higher-end brand.

May 25, 2011 BySarena "super_pog" (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviewsThis review is from: 100% Pure Essential Oil Basic Sampler Set 6/10 ml (Lavender, Tea Tree, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Rosemary and Sweet Orange) (Health and Beauty)I received the oils quickly and with a soap sample which is nice, and most of the oils smell like I expect them too. The eucalyptus, tea tree, orange and rosemary are fine. However, I mostly needed the lavender oil, and it does not smell like lavender oil should. It barely has a recognizable scent at all. The peppermint oil also smells strangely sweet. I agree with the other reviewer that was unhappy with the quality of the oils. I am glad I bought the small sampler sizes instead of full size bottles. I will have to buy a lavender essential oil from the specialty website I have used before to make up for the disappointing scent of the one in this set.
